bridget jones diary opening sequence

Titles and Title fonts: The titles are white and written in a curly font this represents the sort of handwriting girls use. This handwriting links with the title because its being writing like a diary. The main title however is in a bold long font which is like the title of the diary or an opening page of a book, which makes the audience wonder what could be in the dairy and make them watch the rest of the film.

Set: the setting is an apartment which is quite messy and small. This tells the audience that Bridget isn’t really a clean or organised person and the room also that she lives on her own. This shows she doesn’t have much compony round so there is no need for her to make the apartment look presentable.

Costume: Bridget is wearing a long pair of pyjamas. The fact that she is wearing long flannel pyjamas gives the impression that she does not like the look of her body and feels to cover it. She doesn't appear to be going anywhere over the course of the opening. This tells the audience she doesn’t go out and she has no plans. The film will show her becoming important. The audience may see her as vulnerable at the start because she is so lonely.

Characters: we are introduced to Bridget who is alone in her apartment singing to herself. . We can see she is not a very glamorous girl and the fact sh eis singing alone shows us some comedy this automatically tells us that this is not a romance but a Rom-Com . This allows the audience to ask howis she going to meet a man and why would he fancy her or fall in love. The fact that she is over exaggeratedly singing to the song in the background makes the audience she is lonely and depressed and has to entertain herself. We also have to ask why she is so unhappy with her own life and how is it going to change.

Props: The answering machine is used in this opening sequences to show how lonely Bridget is. A cut away shot of it is used saying that she has no messages. They have used the answering machine to show us she has had no messages so we can see no one has tried to contact her.

Story: The story line is that this is a character Bridget jones is depressed and lonely, this shows she isn’t really enjoying life at the moment and wants it to change. As we know this is a rom com we get the idea that her life will turn around but at this point we don’t know how. Also we know that a lot of comical situations will occur to add the comedy into the story.

Genre: The genre of the film is a romantic comedy. We can tell from the opening that this is not just a romance as she acts overly exaggerated and comically to let us know that there are elements of humour in the film. Another clue that shows this is a romantic comedy is that no love interest is shown straight away and so the quest for love is not straight forward as in a romance but is subjectable to be changed for humorous effect.

Music: The song playing in the background is "All by Myself" by Celine Dion. This makes the opening make more sense of her loneliness as Bridget sings along with the lines "all by myself, don't want to be all by myself" showing she is lonely but does not want to be. It also gives us a clear understanding of what the movie will be about as she will try to find love over the course of the film. It also answers quite a lot of questions as it clearly gives a description of Bridgets life at the moment that the song is playing, it leaves the audience not having to question the situation
